Researching and Analyzing Music Videos

The first video I analyzed was by Justin Bieber and the song was 'Beauty and a beat', this video is a performance based video, it mainly consists of Justin singing, dancing and walking with the camera. This video is written and directed by Justin Bieber himself and for the video it is completely done by a hand held camera, which makes it more unsteady during the music video. All the jpeg images I've got are from YouTube.

This is the start to the video, it shows some writing saying where the video has come from.

The video is based in a water park, it has hundreds of people in it doing many different activities like swimming and dancing. The lyrics to this song match up with the video quite well, the main part of the song, the chorus and the verse just before it go like this:     

'We gonna party like it's 3012 tonight
I wanna show you all the finer things in life
So just forget about the world, we're young tonight
I'm coming for ya, I'm coming for ya

Cause all I need
Is a beauty and a beat
Who can make my life complete
It's all about you,
When the music makes you move
Baby, do it like you do'

These lyrics go with the visuals, because during the video at these parts Justin Bieber is dancing and pointing at the camera, he's trying to be direct with the audience and more intimate.

The music and the visuals also match, because he dances in tune with the music, also there is a lot of close ups and mid shots of the artist because of the style of how the video is produced

In the video there is a lot of jump cuts from different shots from all the filming and creating the video:for example from the picture above to a clip of swimmers surrounding Justin below

How a music video makes a persona

All these screen shots are from Justin Bieber's videos from the year 2009 to 2013, each of these videos helped build Bieber into the superstar he is today, these videos give an image of what he is like to his fans and these videos make him more popular.

This screen shot is from Justin Bieber’s first ever video, this sold over 137,000 copies when it first released, when this video was released it gave people an image of this brand new young star with an amazing voice, he was shown as sweet, lovable, irresponsible and childish. His audience for this would be boys and girls aged 9-15.

One of the most viewed videos on YouTube of all time is Justin Bieber feat Ludacris – Baby, it has over 800 million views, this was the video that created all the Hype over Justin Bieber, his fan base became bigger and his name was becoming well known all around the world. In this video he is shown as loving and he is normal just like every other teenager, because the video shows him following and dancing with a girl because he ‘loves’ her and this matches the song.

In March 2011, Justin Bieber released a song called ‘That Should Be Me’ feat Rascal Flatts, this showed a brand new side to Justin Bieber and it showed him as older and more mature, with the new haircut and working with a band like Rascal Flatts, you wouldn’t normally associate the two to work together, because of age and styles of music.

In August 2012, Justin Bieber released ‘As Long As You Love Me’ feat Big Sean, this got over 100 million views on YouTube, this new video shows him wanting to be with this girl and her dad doesn't want that to happen, he ends up being beaten up and this matches the song and changed his persona once again. He is portrayed in this video as more manly, grown up and changed from the past Justin Bieber.

I'm 17 years old, almost 18, yay! I am extremely excited with the prospect of getting to create a music video, I enjoy watching a lot of music videos on YouTube and TV channels such a STARZ. I have a very mixed taste in music, I enjoy pop, rock, alternative rock, indie, RnB, rap and hip-hop. My favourite artist is Justin Bieber, I see him as a role model and an idol, other artists I enjoy are Bastille, Macklemore and Drake.
